Moom for Mac simplifies window moving and zooming

Moom for Mac

Moom
is a Mac utility that aims to simplify the task of moving and sizing windows. Moom can run in three different modes, seen in the image above. The Standard mode will make Moom have a Dock icon as well as menu items in the menu bar. In Menu Bar mode, Moom will only show up in your menu bar, and in the Faceless mode you won't see any sign of its existence at all -- unless you hover over the green zoom button in any window, which is when Moom starts working its magic.

Moom has two ways in which it can be operated -- by using the mouse or the keyboard. Using the mouse, after you've hovered over the aforementioned green zoom icon, a Moom menu will pop-up (above left). From there you can select if you want the current window zoomed to full screen, or if it should only occupy the left or right half of the screen, or even the top or bottom half if you're feeling saucy. The arrow-like icon allows you to revert the window to its original position.

But wait, there's more! If you drag the width/height icons a few pixels instead of just clicking on them, they're transformed into even more options, allowing you to zoom the current window to a(ny) quarter of the screen. How exactly does this work? To make the window occupy the top left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon up, and to assign it to the bottom left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon down.

Keyboard mode lets you control Moom with a global hotkey and the arrow buttons. You can set any key combination to be your global Moom hotkey, and set any subsequent key press to do any action that Moom can accomplish. Using the keyboard also gives you the option of centering a window, something which can't yet be done with the mouse. Hit the jump for a screenshot of the entire keyboard shortcut configuration menu to admire the amazing number of ways in which you can customize your interactions with Moom. Last, but definitely not least, you can rest assured knowing that Moom does support multiple displays.

Moom works for 100 uses in its free demo mode, after which you can purchase it either directly from Many Tricks (the developer), or from the Mac App Store. The license costs $5.

A Look Back On Our Mobile First CrunchUp And 6th Annual Summer Party At August Capital

We had a blast yesterday at our Mobile First Crunchup and 6th Annual Summer Party at August Capital. At our CrunchUp, we had some amazing speakers and special guests. Even Chamillionaire managed to make a certain speaker sweat and started a debate on why Android doesn't have a decent phone. Later in the day, the drinks were flowing at August Capital and even Ron Conway was spotted enjoying a margarita or two. Our summer party was a huge success and we want to thank everyone who came.We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Bing Vision technology gets explained

Get Microsoft Silverlight

Over at iStartedSomething, Long Zheng posted a nice little clip from Microsoft Research dealing with 2D object recognition, which for those who have been following, is instantiated in Windows Phone "Mango" as Bing Vision (see demo). The tool of course allows to you scan various 2D objects like CDs, DVDs, posters, barcodes, etc. which can then access a database for pricing and product info.

In this brief segment, Rick Szeliski from Microsoft Research?s Interactive Visual Media group goes into detail of how this works. While it's some heady stuff, most of you should be able to watch the ~4 minute segment and get an understanding of how this stuff happens and what the current limitations are--specifically 3D objects and "generics" likes recognizing your pet or people.

While Google has had Goggles for awhile and all of this is based on pre-existing tech, it's neat to see it explained. Plus it doesn't take the magic away when you actually use Bing Vision on your phone (as anyone who has demoed this to a non-techy can attest too). Pretty amazing work when you think about it.

Mobile Has The Opportunity To Re-Think The Ad

Kleiner Perkins VC Chi-Hua Chien kicked off the "Money Matters" panel at the TechCrunch Mobile First CrunchUp with a telling understatement, "There seems to be a lot of new business models around mobile." Indeed, what makes mobile unique as a communication platform is that traditional advertising isn't the default. See: Kiip. As Chien pointed out, because of constraints on-screen size, display ads won't cut it when your screen is 3 inches wide. As constraints often necessitate creative solutions, we're seeing a shift on mobile that has resulted in many businesses trying a multitude solutions for monetizing mobile transactions, specifically commerce and deals or offers.

Turn your iPad into a mini-keyboard with ION's Piano Apprentice

ION recently announced a new piano accessory for the iPad that will let you play and learn piano on a mini-keyboard. While piano-playing apps on the iPad are fun, they are not useful for instruction as the 9.7-inch display of the iPad is too small for a reasonably sized keyboard. ION solved that problem with its new Piano Apprentice, a dock for an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch that includes a 25-note lighted keyboard with touch-sensitive keys.

The keyboard dock includes an iOS app that teaches you how to play piano with the help of instructor Scott Houston. You can follow his hands on the screen while you play on the keyboard. The keys on the dock will even light up while you practice your tune. The Piano Apprentice will arrive this fall for US$100.

ION Intros Portable Keyboard with Lighted Keys & Piano Learning Software for iPad, iPhone & iPad
PIANO APPRENTICE turns a portable keyboard into a traveling music teacher with an intelligent piano learning software app.

Cumberland, R.I. (July 19, 2011) - ION, a leader in consumer audio and entertainment technology, announces PIANO APPRENTICE, a portable lighted-key piano learning system for iPad, iPhone or iPod. ION will showcase PIANO APPRENTICE at Booth #400 at the 2011 Summer NAMM show from July 21st- 23rd in Nashville, TN.

PIANO APPRENTICE portable piano transforms iPad, iPhone or iPod into a personal piano instructor. The PIANO APPRENTICE App - a free download from the App Store - is piano learning software designed and built by ION to work seamlessly with PIANO APPRENTICE and creates a comprehensive music-learning experience. Piano players follow along as Emmy award-winning piano instructor, Scott Houston (aka "The Piano Guy"), appears on the screen demonstrating how to play while the PIANO APPRENTICE keys light up in time with the music. In addition, Scott's hands are right above the PIANO APPRENTICE keyboard, showing the user where to place their hands, teaching them how to play.

Other modes will teach aspiring pianists how to read sheet music or allow them to simply play the piano at any octave they choose. The portable keyboard itself is touch sensitive, responding to soft or hard playing accordingly for expressive music creation. PIANO APPRENTICE is lightweight, battery powered, and has built-in speakers for learning and playing anywhere. A headphone jack is included for quiet practice at anytime.

"PIANO APPRENTICE enables people everywhere to bring out their inner musician using their iPad, iPhone or iPod, even if they've never played an instrument before," said Wendy Mittelstadt, Product Manager, ION. "This is a incredibly easy-to-use and portable system for learning and music creation."

Appeals Court overrules lower court, upholds breast cancer gene test

A bit over two years ago, a large collection of interested parties joined together with the ACLU to challenge a practice that had become business as usual: the patenting of human genes. The group filed a suit that targeted a specific set of patents: those used by Myriad Genetics to control the market for tests of the BRCA breast cancer genes. In a surprise result, the judge overseeing the case issued a sweeping ruling that not only voided Myriad's patents, but seemed to put all gene patents at risk. Now that decision has been reversed, as an Appeals Court has upheld the patents in question.

The initial ruling that voided Myriad's patents relied on a novel interpretation of what was being patented. Patents on natural substances are allowed if the process of obtaining them is transformative, meaning the end result differs significantly from the original, natural state. In order to do genetic testing, the judge reasoned, it didn't matter which particular DNA molecule was obtained or in what manner—what you needed was the information conveyed by the gene, in terms of its protein sequence, not a specific piece of DNA. And that information is a natural product, which can't be patented unless it was transformed in some way. Since the genetic test doesn't involve any transformations, then the patents were invalid. Since many other gene-focused patents relied on this sort of information, rather than the actual DNA, this decision seemed to place many of them at risk.

Gay marriage should not be made legal

OPINION EDITOR
It is unfortunate that there is such a growing stigma attached to arguing against gay marriage ? at least here in the liberal bastion that is Massachusetts. If one is opposed to legalizing gay marriage, it is automatically assumed that the opposition rests on a basis of hate, homophobia, or other such negative motivations. There are, in fact, legitimate, substantive reasons as to why gay marriage should not be legalized.

How one independent retailer competes with Apple Stores

Darryl Peck has a 25-year long history of working with Apple; first as a software developer, then as a reseller at outpost.com. Four years ago, the seasoned businessman decided to open his own retail store, PeachMac, and now he competes head-to-head with the Cupertino company.

Even though Apple has five stores throughout Georgia, Peck still manages to draw in customers. Similar to Apple, the secret to his success is ample inventory, attractive store layout and exceptional customer service.

Peck fills his stores chock full of Apple products and over 1500 accessories, as compared to the 300 or so carried at Apple Stores. Each accessory is carefully selected and tested for product compatibility before placing it on the shelves. Inventory inside the store is well-organized and pleasing to customers.

Peck also places a high priority on customer service. He hires top-notch people and offers different programs and workshops not offered by Apple retail stores. Because he runs a small operation, Peck can focus more on his customers and believes the programs he offers are better than Apple's.

This strategy is working out well for Peck. Despite the odds, PeachMac is thriving. The entrepreneur has five PeachMac stores in operation and plans to open three more by the end of the year.

Music Industry Wants To Put 'Red Lights' In Google For Sites It Says Support Infringement

The recording industry's massive sense of entitlement continues to spread. The latest is that PRS for Music, the organization that once sought license fees for playing music to horses in a stable, has suggested that Google start putting "traffic lights" in its search results, with red lights being used to indicate sites that the industry accuses of supporting copyright infringement. You can see what they think it should look like here:
They say that, in the UK, this would meet the Digital Economy Act's requirement for "consumer education." Of course, one would hope that consumers were "educated" enough to know that just because someone accuses you of copyright infringement, it doesn't mean that you're guilty.

The whole system is modeled on Google's current practice of warning people about potential security problems with sites. Of course, that involves something that can be much more easily confirmed. In the meantime, I imagine that Google -- who spends a ridiculous amount of time and effort to test any UI changes to its search results -- is probably horrified by that graphic above.
